The fast fashion chain is directly linked to environmental pollution due to the use of material and immediate disposal. The extensive resource extraction is also a definitive issue. A huge issue with fast fashion is the massive use of water and the waste water that particularly is used with the making of textiles. The industry produces 92 million tonnes of waste a year. And beyond just waste water, the industry also has a huge impact on CO2 emissions.

After research I have found that this claim is true. According to sources like UCLA Sustainability and the Government Accountability Office, fast fashion is is bad for the environment. Fast fashion results in faster and greater production, more fossil fuels, worse quality clothes, and more product being used for shorter amounts of time adding to the problem of too much garbage and micro plastics in the world. "To reduce costs the clothing is made of worse and worse materials like polyester, otherwise known as plastic or fossil fuels, which does not decompose. Since the quality is poor and the clothing doesn’t last, it ends up in landfills or waterways. These clothes can break up even further into microplastics which pollute our planet even more and are harder to clean up." (“The Fast Fashion Epidemic,” 2024).

Fact. Fast fashion contributes significantly to environmental destruction. Impact FastFashion is a significant polluter of the environment and the planet. The fashion industry accounts for about 10% of global carbon emissions, which is more than all international flights and libal shipping, UNEP and Earth.Org data reveal. Additionally, it takes about 2,000 gallons of water to produce one pair of jeans, and washing synthetic fabrics sheds approximately 500,000 tons of microfibers into the ocean each year.

This claim is true. There is an environmental price to fast fashion. There is a need for fundamental changed between the fashion business and the need to keep our environment safe and clean. In the article, https://www.nature.com/articles/s43017-020-0039-9, it states that "n the basis of these environmental impacts, we outline the need for fundamental changes in the fashion business model, including a deceleration of manufacturing and the introduction of sustainable practices throughout the supply chain, as well a shift in consumer behaviour — namely, decreasing clothing purchases and increasing garment lifetimes." They believe there is a need to slow the fashion business as well as it is creating trouble between the two. If the problems continue they will harm our world/environment even more.

True. Fast fashion is a major cause of harm to the environment. The fashion industry accounts for an estimated 10% of the world’s carbon emissions – more than all flights worldwide and international maritime shipping combined, according to United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Earth.Org data. In addition, producing one pair of jeans takes about 2,000 gallons of water and washing synthetic textiles emits around 500,000 tons of microfibers into the ocean each year.

Summary:

This claim has been proven true. The main source I used was the U.S. Government Accountability Office, and they explained how fast fashion is rapidly damaging our planet: “66% of discarded textiles end up in landfills”. This waste that is accumulating in our landfills takes decades to decompose, so the uprise in fast fashion is overpopulating these landfills and is greatly contributing to climate change. Additionally, the fibers that make up clothing consist of oils that contribute to an increase of carbon emissions. Chellie Pingree states, “ fashion industry is now responsible for more carbon emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined”. Satellite imaging has recovered photos of the damage fast fashion is causing our planet, meaning there is enough clothing produced for it to be seen from outer space. Overall, after fact checking this claim, the statement has been proven true by multiple government-run websites.

The claim that fast fashion is bad for the environment is true. Fast fashion relies on producing large quantities of cheap clothing quickly, which requires massive amounts of water, energy, and chemicals. For example, it can take about 2,700 liters of water to make a single cotton t-shirt, enough water for one person to drink for over two years. The production process also releases greenhouse gases and pollutes waterways with dyes and microplastics. Additionally, fast fashion encourages a “throwaway” culture, leading to huge amounts of textile waste in landfills. Because of these factors, fast fashion contributes significantly to environmental damage, and reducing consumption or choosing sustainable brands can help mitigate these effects.

This claim is true. According to a story written by the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP), "Plastic fibres are polluting the oceans, the wastewater, toxic dyes, and the exploitation of underpaid workers. Fast fashion is big business, and while the environmental costs are rising, experts say there is another way: a circular economy for textiles." I also know just from looking at the materials of fast fashion products that they are usually made of polyester or a polyester blend, which is a plastic. There is also a statistic from Business insider, via Earth.org, "fashion production comprises 10% of total global carbon emissions, as much as the emissions generated by the European Union." Earth.org also supports the claim about the excessive amount of water that is used. They claim "The fashion industry is the second-largest consumer of water among industries, requiring about 700 gallons to produce one cotton shirt and 2,000 gallons of water to produce a pair of jeans."

]This claim is accurate and well-supported by environmental research. Fast fashion has significant negative environmental impacts across carbon emissions, water consumption, pollution, and waste generation.

The UN Environment Programme reports the fashion industry accounts for approximately 10% of global carbon emissions, exceeding all international flights and maritime shipping combined. The industry requires about 700 gallons of water to produce a single cotton shirt and 2,000 gallons for a pair of jeans (https://earth.org/fast-fashions-detrimental-effect-on-the-environment/). Textile dyeing is the world's second-largest polluter of water, and synthetic fabrics release an estimated 35% of ocean microplastics through washing (https://www.genevaenvironmentnetwork.org/resources/updates/sustainable-fashion/).

The EPA found that 66% of discarded textiles ended up in landfills in 2018, releasing greenhouse gases as they decompose. Clothing is now worn only 7-10 times on average before disposal, down over 35% in fifteen years. The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change projects textile manufacturing emissions will increase 60% by 2030 if trends continue (https://www.gao.gov/blog/fast-fashion-great-your-wallet-costly-planet).

Fast fashion is harmful for the environment. Numerous sources are strained to continue fast clothing trends which takes 700 gallons of water for a shirt and 2,000 gallons to make one pair of jeans. The microplastics from synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic that numerous years to break down. Another issue is the spike in leather production which impact land, water, and other pertinent resources for other cause which all production using a vast amount of energy which increase the gas pollution crisis. Overall fast fashion be stopped or decreased immediately if humans want to have a world to still live in the next century.
