The claim that the senate passed a bill to end the government shutdown is correct. On Wednesday, November 12, the longest ever government shutdown in US history of 43 days ended, meaning the federal government is now reopened.
The government was shut down on October 1, 2025, due to Congress failing to agree and pass legislation for the 2026 fiscal year. The Republican party controls the House, yet they still could not come to an agreement with Democrats about passing the bill.
The “Funding Package” Republicans wanted to put forth was a 328 page bill that extended money for a lot of federal agencies until January 30. According to BBC News, “It provides funding for Snap food aid, as well as the Department of Agriculture, Congress and veterans affairs until September next year.” However, Democrats disagreed and would not vote to pass this bill because it left out one incredibly important thing: healthcare. According to NBC News, “Democrats shut down the federal government to secure a key demand: extending health care subsidies for millions of Americans.”
On Wednesday night, 6 Democrats joined Republicans to pass the bill with a vote of 222 - 209.
Although the government is reopened, this does not mean everything will go back to normal. In fact, it will take several federal agencies quite a while to bounce back from the lack of funding and the reparations caused by the shutdown. According to NPR, “ …some impacts could continue much longer than six weeks, whether that's national parks trying to make up for lost visitor revenue or taxpayers waiting longer for refunds from a backlogged Internal Revenue Service (IRS)”
