The general claim is true, but the second half lacks evidence. According to USA Times, on October 31, President Trump held a Great-Gatsby-themed party at Mar-A-Lago, which was attended by Republican fellows and members of Trump's family. This is amid the ongoing government shutdown which has threatened the end of SNAP benefits for millions of Americans. Democrats and concerned citizens have criticized the president for his poor timing and distasteful Roaring 20's theme. Frustration among left-leaning groups has led to conclusions that the Trump administration is purposefully withholding funds, as Trump continues to pay military and enforcement groups such as ICE, along with current ambitions to construct a ballroom on the former East Wing of the White House.
On the same day, judges in Massachusetts and Rhode Island ordered the administration to use contingency funds to continue funding the food aid program through the government shutdown. In response, the Trump administration has said that it will partially fund the program (The Los Angeles Times. 2025). The government shutdown, which began on October 1, has seen blame pointed at both sides though recent reports see an increase in Americans blaming President Trump and Republicans (The Washington Post. 2025). The debate started with Democrats demanding "extensions on expiring subsidies on Affordable Care Act health insurance plans". In response, Republicans have refused to negotiate "until Congress passes new government funding bills". Republicans currently have control of the Senate and the House in Congress.
