According to a variety of different sources, the claim that “Obama committed treason” is false. There have been no credible sources or findings that have anything related to him committing a crime.

CNN was the primary source used. It reinforced the fact that the claim is false because they were accusing him based on what they thought went down in the election not based on actual evidence. Russia even tried to influence the 2016 election, but no votes were changed and Obama was not involved in anything illegal, said Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. Either way the claim lacks evidence, and fails to exceed any guidelines required to prove it was true. CNN

To back this up and build on the previous claim, the website BBC also supports the opposing view to Trump. They emphasized Trump's views where he claimed Obama “plotted to sabotage his first presidency” or “They tried to steal the election.” Rather than supporting him, they disagreed, saying they were irrational. Obama's spokesperson just believed it was “a poor attempt at creating a distraction,” whereas, Trump was simply referring to a report that “accused Obama and his national security team of a "years-long coup against President Trump." A video is the final piece to conclude that this claim is false. Every accusation needs a response which is what makes this piece so important. They show back and forth clips regarding the dispute between Trump and Biden. Trump reiterated the Russia dispute, but Biden rejected it all. Youtube Vid

This claim is false. There is no credible evidence that former President Barack Obama committed treason. Treason as defined by the U.S. Constitution, is narrowly limited to demand war against the United States or adhering to its enemies by giving them aid and comfort. Nothing associated with Obama meets that strict legal standard. NBC reports on a recent wave of accusations from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and President Trump, who claimed Obama fomented a “treasonous conspiracy” tied to intelligence surrounding the 2016 election. These allegations have no substantiation and have been broadly dismissed by officials. CNN describes Trump's treason accusations against Obama as unfounded noting no evidence supports such a claim.

There is no verifiable evidence for the claim that former President Barack Obama committed an act of treason before, during, or after his presidency.

FactCheck (Spencer, 2018)

This article from Trump's first term confirms that there's no evidence Obama committed an act of treason, and he was never "busted" by the feds at any point.

Aljazeera (2025)

This article addresses President Trump's accusations of former President Obama committing treason, though consludes that his statements are without evidence and lacks truthful foundation.

AP (Tau, Tucker, 2025)

This article most recently addresses claims involving Obama with conspiracy, though no where confirms he commits an act of treason, or even committed any acts.

The claim that the former president committed treason lack evidence and support and is legally untrue. To commit treason, U.S. law requires that one must levy war against the United States or give aid to enemies, neither of which are confirmed to have been carried out by Obama.

This claim is false as there is no true evidence that supports that former President Obama committed treason. In July of 2025, President Trump accused Obama of committing treason with regards to the 2016 election. Trump's claim was that Obama had sought to undermine his 2016 victory over Hillary Clinton. According to BBC, Trump's accusations stem from a recent report from "US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard that accused Obama and his national security team of a years-long coup against President Trump." Trump arouse these allegations following questions from reporters about sex offender and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, which Obama spokesman Patrick Rodenbush dubbed as " a weak attempt at distraction" from the questions about Epstein. A recent report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence argued that there were suppressed findings that Russia had failed in probing attempts to hack US election databases in 2016. This report said that Obama’s aides changed how intelligence on Russia’s election interference was handled in 2016, which republicans are calling evidence of a “treasonous conspiracy.” Obama's office does not deny findings that Russia did try to influence the 2016 election, though it didn’t actually change the vote results and were not aided by Obama or the Democrat party. Overall, intelligence reports disagree on the details, but most evidence still says Russia attempted to interfere but without confirmed aid from Obama.

Another reliable source, Reuters, backed the information that BBC provided that Trump's accusation and therefore this claim, are false. Reuters confirms that Trump did make the claim that Obama committed treason during the 2016 election without any evidence to back him up. Trump's claim stems from his intelligence chief, Tulsi Gabbard, claiming that Obama officials conspired in 2016 to undermine Trump however U.S. intelligence reports and bipartisan Senate investigations have repeatedly found no evidence of a plot against Trump. They concluded instead that Russia tried to help Trump’s campaign through disinformation and hacking but did not alter votes. This article also brings up that Trump's claims were made following reporters questions on the topic of Jeffrey Epstein and suggests that the presidents claims were an act of diversion from the topic of Epstein.

Overall, I am concluding that this claim is false. There is evidence that Russia attempted to tamper with the 2016 election, however there is no information that can confirm either that Russia had an effect on the 2016 election results or that the Obama administration aided in Russia's attempts.

Each of the intelligence assessments and investigations made public agree that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. election — but none found that Barack Obama had committed treason or had knowingly fabricated intelligence to subvert the election. For example, the declassified Intelligence Community Assessment (Jan 6, 2017) states that “the Intelligence Community assessed that the Russian government directed an influence campaign in 2016 to undermine public confidence in the U.S. democratic process” but does not assess that Obama or his aides developed a false intelligence narrative (Office of the Director of National Intelligence, 2017). Similarly, the Mueller Report (March 2019) documents Russian interference “in sweeping and systematic fashion” but concludes that investigators “did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government” and offers no indictment or findings that Obama committed treason (U.S. Department of Justice, 2019). Finally, the Senate Intelligence Committee Report (Volumes I–V, 2020) details extensive Russian active-measures operations and vulnerabilities and does not lead to the conclusion that Obama or his administration knowingly engaged in treasonous wrongdoing (U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, 2020). Treason is narrowly defined in U.S. law, and none of the public investigations point to credible evidence or accusations against Obama that would amount to proof of treason.
