The original claim found on the Bluesky app was posted by the Associated Press, linking to an article written by reporters Steve Karnowski and Alanna Durkin Richer. Both Karnowski and Richer have worked for AP for over a decade as a State Capitol reporter (for Minnesota) and a Justice Department reporter respectively. In addition to the headline, the AP article reports on the response to this shooting, providing video of protesters and officials clashing, and the general responses by the courts, officials, and students regarding ICE activity in Minneapolis. Wanting more information about the claim, I searched "Minneapolis shooting Jan 14th" and found articles from multiple major media outlets (CBS, CNN, The New York Times). According to CBS News, the individual was identified as Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, a Venezuelan migrant who was stopped by ICE. On January 15th, Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief Brian O'Hara responded to the shooting in a press conference that was streamed on YouTube. Chief O'Hara confirms that "a federal agent discharged his weapon, striking one adult male." The Department of Homeland Security also released a statement saying that "two subjects came out of a nearby apartment and attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and broom handle." Unfortunately, there is no video footage or witness accounts of this confrontation, however, with all of the news coverage from major media outlets and statements made by DHS, Mayor Frey, and Chief O'Hara, I am inclined to believe that the claim is true.

The article provided by AP presents the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) account of the Minneapolis shooting. It frames the officer’s actions as a “self-defense” mechanism during an arrest attempt. This action taken heavily relies on the DHS to explain why force was used, with the article emphasizing that the officer was allegedly attacked by multiple individuals with objects such as a shovel and broom handle, and that when the suspect got shot in the leg there were not long-term threatening injuries.

In Minneapolis on Jan. 14, 2026, a federal law enforcement officer shot and wounded a man during an immigration arrest. As alleged by Officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the officer was attacked by the man and two others wielding a snow shovel and broom handle, which prompted the officer to retaliate in self-defense. The version of events as reported by the AP is supported by the official statement from the DHS, however, there is a conflicting first-hand account from the man's wife.

The injured man's wife claims that he was chased by agents, made it inside their home, and then was shot by them when he closed the door. This discrepancy has aided in further fueling the public protests in Minneapolis, which were already heated considering the fatal ICE agent shooting just a week prior.

The official narrative is that the officer fired after a rather violent struggle, however there are opposing claims (specifically from his wife) supporting the idea that this shooting was not justified. The claim is somewhat contested, but there seems to be more weight on the idea that there was an "attack".

Be wary of the "official reports". The DHS and Federal Officials have a very clear institutional interest in portraying federal operations as legitimate and just. It is very possible that they are emphasizing or even exaggerating the danger posed by the suspect and others. We know that DHS narratives have been contradicted in the past (look at what happened in the Renee Good video versus what was said), so take everything with a grain of salt.

On the contrary, we have oppositional bias from Minnesota officials like Frey and Walz, who are seeking out ICE's departure from their state. This may lead them to downplaying any wrongdoings done by locals, and only highlighting misconducts done by federal agents. Just keep in mind biases on both sides.

The "shovel attack" claim is supported by the DHS and the Minneapolis Police Chief. We also know that there were two additional suspects arrested in this altercation, meaning that there was definitely more than one party involved. The officer who was allegedly attacked was also injured and taken to the hospital according to Fox 9.

The family's account of the shooting occurring after the man had already ran inside is the only supporting counter-claim I have found. We still do not have any supporting evidence for this claim, but there is simultaneously no independent verification of the shovel attack occurring.

Ultimately, this is a very ambiguous situation. There is little evidence to affirm or deny that a shovel attack occurred other than claims from DHS officials. We do know that the officer was hospitalized, but his injuries were never detailed. An altercation clearly occurred, but the more minute details could possibly be misrepresented.

You do a good job laying out both the DHS narrative and the wife’s account instead of defaulting to one side. I’m still skeptical of the “shovel attack” claim being treated as stronger just because multiple officials repeat it that isn’t the same as independent confirmation. I like that you acknowledge bias on both sides and ultimately frame this as an ambiguous situation rather than rushing to a verdict.

According to the article linked in the text, it seems that someone was shot after attacking a federal officer with a shovel. According to BBC, the man (Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis) was shot and taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. The ICE officer was also injured in the attack and taken to the hospital.

Homeland Security stated that Sosa-Celis was trying to escape arrest in his vehicle before crashing into a parked car. After getting out of the car andfleeing on foot, the ICE agent caught up to him, and a violent struggle ensued. While Sosa-Celis was resisting, two more men emerged from an apartment and joined the fight. The officer claimed he then fired his weapon to defend himself. After the officer fired, all three people ran and locked themselves inside an apartment. However, this was ultimately in vain as they all ended up being arrested.

In addition, Mayor Frey and Chief O’Hara address the issue and what happened that night. This goes to show that the article and claim are both accurate due to the number of credible sources and consistent claims.

I believe the Bluesky post is real and not fake. It accurately reflects a verified AP News report that a federal officer shot a person in the leg after being attacked with a shovel in Minneapolis, and multiple reputable sources confirm the incident, with no credible evidence contradicting the story.

"A federal officer shot a person in the leg after being attacked with a shovel during a Minneapolis arrest." This claim comes from the AP which is a generally reliable news source, but the initial report relies on information from law enforcement sources. Coverage from creditable sources such as ABC News and Minnesota Public Radio both report the same basic facts. This shows consistency across reliable sources. When tracing the claim back it shows that the original information comes from statements by the Department of Homeland Security. Which says that officers were attacked during an arrest attempt and an officer fired in response. Because this is based off of official government statements the claim seems to be mostly true with important context. The details have not been independently confirmed. The primary source is the Department of Homeland Security and secondary sources are PBS, AP and ABC News.

The claim that a federal officer shot a person in the leg after being attacked with a shovel during a Minneapolis arrest is true. In the original Associated Press article written by Steve Karnowski and Alanna Durkin Richier, from which this Bluesky post originates, it claims, "A federal officer shot a man in the leg in Minneapolis after being attacked with a shovel and broom handle while trying to make an arrest Wednesday," which corroborates the claim that a federal officer shot a person in the leg. https://apnews.com/article/

The article from the Associated Press provides a video of federal officers firing tear gas after the shooting occurred. The article also has sources from the Department of Homeland Security that gave firsthand accounts of the shooting, where the officer feared for his life and safety, so he fired a defensive shot. NPR corroborates the article made by the Associated Press, which claims an ICE agent shot a Venezuelan man in the leg after being "ambushed and attacked by two other people and the immigrant they were trying to arrest." The article also mentions the ICE agent being attacked with a snow shovel and broom handle before the shooting occurred. https://www.npr.org/2026/01/15/nx-s1-5678159/dhs-ice-officers-in-minneapolis-shoot-venezuelan-man-in-the-leg

However, a CNN article claims that the driver of the car was Alfredo Alejandro Aljorna, not Sosa-Celis, whom ICE claims was driving, according to a video call made with Sosa-Celis's partner, which appears to contradict ICE's claims regarding the shooting. During the call, Sosa-Cellis’s partner said, “He ran and they threw themselves on top of him. After, Julio threw open the door, and they shot.https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/18/us/ice-agent-shooting-video-minneapolis

The Associated Press is considered to be a relatively centrist or center-left leaning news publication. Multiple other sources corroborate the claims made by the Associated Press regarding the shooting, including NPR.

Think of this as your investigation log. Answer each question to explain what you discovered and how you got there.
The claim provided says that a federal officer shot a person in the leg after being attacked with a shovel during a Minneapolis arrest. Going deeper into the AP News source, I noticed that everything they were saying came from a report from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). I looked into this report and found a very biased article that Homeland Security posted about the event. Leading with the headline, " DHS Releases More Details About the Three Violent Criminal Illegal Aliens Who Violently Beat a Law Enforcement Officer with Weapons." The vocabulary used in this article isn't just derogatory on so many levels but also shows a clear agenda of where they are at politically. This article confirms the identity of the person who was shot which his name is Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis. It's said that At 6:50 PM CT on January 14, 2025, federal law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted traffic stop in Minneapolis. Julio was claimed to evade and ended up crashing into a parked car where he then starts evading on foot. It was also claimed that the federal officer tried detaining Julio when two other individuals came out to attack the federal officer.

The weapons mentioned to be used on Julio is allegedly a snow shovel and broom handle. After Julio was released from the attack, Julio was said to join in as the officer then shoots a "defensive" shot which ends up in Julio's leg. CBS and PBS New's also released articles that confirm this but I also notice that they got their information from DHS as well. However what was interesting was that after Julio got shot both Homeland Security and CBS said that the three individuals fled into a residence, yet CBS claimed 4 people in the residence including Julio was taken into custody while Homeland Security only mentioned 3 individuals and Julio was sent to the hospital. In a Newsweek article I was able to find the names of the 2 other individuals that were involved with Julio. It states that, "Federal immigration officials on Thursday identified Julio Cesar Sosa‑Celis, Alfredo Alejandro Ajorna and Gabriel Alejandro Hernandez‑Ledezma as the three men accused of attacking an ICE officer during an attempted arrest in Minneapolis.

This is a hard case to follow as there isn't too many eyewitnesses or claims from what happened from the Officer or Julio, Alfredo, and Gabriel. DHS's article frames the officer as a "hero" and used "self-defense" as their way to persuade the audience that the shot taken was justified in their eyes. So even with the fact that all these articles indicate Julio was shot, I can't nessisarily find any other details from any other article that isn't supported using DHS's article to back them up since the Homeland Security report is very biased.

Overall I do think this claim is accurate at the look of it yet there is more to be said and more to be investigated. Unfortunately, there is no other evidence that I could find that shows an alternative of what the Officer's reasoning of shooting was. All we have is DHS and it is clear as all other news media mentioned has used DHS to back their claims up. It is important to again note that DHS has a clear agenda which can heavily effect the claim of reasoning of this shooting taken place.
