Trump is set to sue BBC because they misled and edited a speech that was delivered on January 6, 2021. Donald Trump is filing a lawsuit seeking 1 billion dollars and claimed that the media made him look "violent" and hurt his image. Trump's speech was delivered to his supporters claiming that the election was rigged and stolen and that his supporters should make their voices heard. He emphasized that republicans should "fight like hell. And if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore."

Through this whole scandal BBC has since issued an apology to the president saying that they "unintentionally created the impression" (The Washington Post) that Trump was urging violence. BBC claims that they did not commit defamation and therefore does not owe him anything. However if Trump follows through and files a lawsuit, then BBC media will more than likely lose the lawsuit.

This claim is true. The BBC did edit a video of Trump speaking in a way that made him look bad. They apologized for it, but don’t want to pay Trump anything. According to NPR, “While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim” (NPR, 2025). Trump is in fact suing the BBC for lots of money, and it is looking like a very complicated case. According to NBC News, “We’ll sue them for anywhere between $1 billion and $5 billion, probably sometime next week” (NBC News, 2025). This shows that this claim is true.
