Upon some simple fact checking, very few sources have reported on this subject. This linked article is the main one that comes up, however, there are some other articles stating the same thing from websites like ScienceAlert and Live Science. All the other sources that come up regarding gold deposit found in China is dated or only somewhat related to the sheer amount of gold that was found. However, this lack of sources doesn't necessarily make this claim false. I think that this news just isn't as popular, and reporters/news companies have been focusing their efforts on other stories. For the time being, there are a few articles regarding this subject but they all state the same information including how much the gold is worth, when it was found, and how. If information comes out proving that this claim was false, I wouldn't be surprised, so for now I think it's best to stay updated on this subject and hopefully more sources will report on it.

The evidence you presented is excellent. You used reputable sources, and it shows you did your due diligence with this fact check. I enjoy how you didn't flat-out say it is true or false because it is something that is under investigation. It can't be true or false yet.

I like how you pointed out that there is not much information about this claim and therefor was harder to fact check. Were the articles dated by a couple years? Or fairly recent? And when you refrents the "sheer amount of golf" are you refering to there being more or less gold then the post alluded too?

This was super helpful in understanding the lack of information. I wonder how old the articles were that were published? I also appreciate how you point out that the lack of sources does not make it false.

You made this comment with good sources, and it is really nice. I understood it was hard to fact-check with not a lot of information, but you did a very good job.

I completely agree with your view point as well. In my opinion one of the most compelling aspects of your views was your perspective of "source" or put another way, even if there is less coverage of an event it does not mean the information reported about this event is incorrect. Sometimes less coverage indicates which types of reporting will receive coverage. This will give us a better understanding of how we should consider consuming media and gives us methods to assess the validity of statements before accepting them.

This is true according to Chinese local government websites. On this post posted on the Hunan Provice People's Government Website and this post posted on the Geological Bureau of Hunan Province Website, I see all the figures and locations mentioned on the Fox News "600 billion yuan", "Pingjiang County", "Wangu Goldfield", "40 gold ore veins", "300.2 tons of gold resources".

The information and claims on the two posts are identical with the Fox news article, so this is true.

The claim that the world's largest gold deposit was just found in China is unequivocally true. Fox News, which is the source provided in the original claim, says that the deposit is worth $83 billion. “News week”, “ScienceAlert”, “Daily mail”, and the “Economic times” all back up this same claim. The only source I found saying differently about this is “Marksman daily” claiming the deposit was worth 600 billion. With this assortment of sources it's fair to say that the claim is true.

I appreciate how you pointed out that many other sources are backing up the claim. The one source that says such a different number is weird, but since it is the only claim it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. I would say just make sure to include the links to your other sources.

Summary of Findings

Fox News reports that the world's largest deposit of gold worth $83 billion was found in China, citing Xinhua News as their source. Xinhua news, the state-owned official news outlet of the People's Republic of China, reported that the Hunan Academy of Geology "found more than 40 gold ore veins at a depth of more than 2,000 meters in Pingjiang county, with a total of 300.2 tons of gold resources discovered in the core exploration area and a highest grade of 138 grams per metric ton" (Reuters). Other news outlets reporting on the gold discovery include Reuters, the New York Post, and Newsweek. Each news outlet seems to cite Xinhua News as their source. The New York Post and Newsweek are not typically considered reliable news sources, but Reuters is considered generally reliable and unbiased. Xinhua News, however, has been accused of circulating pro-CCP propaganda and receives a large portion of its funding from the Chinese government (Sage Publishing). There is currently no information refuting the claim that the deposit found in China is the largest in the world, however there seem to be few unbiased reliable sources reporting on the news. Given the available information, this claim is likely true.

Sources and Evidence

Source of headline; Fox News is a right-leaning news organization whose reliability is highly debated, although the news organization has been criticized for spreading misinformation or exaggerated stories in the past.

The New York Post is often criticized for reporting exaggerated and misleading stories, and is not considered a consistent source of reliable news. They were cited in the Fox News article, and seem to report similar information based on the original Xinhua News story.

Reuters is considered a reliable source of unbiased news, and is often cited for breaking news on economics and politics. Reuters was referenced by Fox News, and also appears to cite Xinhua News as their original source of information regarding the gold discovery.

I appreciate that you didn’t just take the headline at face value and actually looked into where the information was coming from. Tracing it back to Xinhua News and comparing it with outlets like Reuters shows you were thinking critically about the reliability of the claim.

This article is true the findings in China were real by checking other sources it was just a little hard to find other sources because it wasn't that big of a story and media outlets were focused on other stories, but it is a true article and the Chinese Gold source out beat its past record being in Africa so this is something big for the world of gold being how much of it was found.

Other sources I found:

I'm interested in the different information that is shared from Chinas news sources and the American news. From what I have seen in the US is that its a false claim with some truth to it.

China did discover a very large gold deposit, but it has not been fully confirmed as the world’s largest. Reports from 2024 and 2025 described major gold finds, including China’s biggest domestic discovery since 1949. However, calling it the “largest in the world” may be misleading because that depends on how gold deposits are measured and whether the estimates are independently verified. A more accurate statement is that China found one of the largest recent gold deposits, but its global ranking is still uncertain.

I completely agree with you and found similar evidence around the topic. I think. the claim made by fox news along with almost every other claim they make are exaggerated.

It is very true that there was a very large gold mine found in China, However the title of worlds largest is not the exact truth. As miners and scientists are still determining the scale of the veins of gold and the title or worlds largests is actually, the worlds largest since 1949.

All of the sources I have looked at or found have agreed with the fact that there is indeed a large gold deposit in china, but the details are all varying.

1. Reports by different news agencies suggest that Chinese geologists discovered a large gold mine in the Hunan province with a value of approximately $83 billion. The above-mentioned estimation is based on preliminary findings made during the course of geological exploration that shows there may be as many as 1,000 tons of gold in the mine. However, it is important to state here that the said value remains speculative at the moment because no mining activity has taken place yet.

2. Geological Survey of Hunan Province (geological survey results), According to reports by Chinese geologists, the drilling conducted in the Wangu gold mining zone in the province of Hunan has revealed the existence of more than 30 gold veins in the region, with an estimation of more than hundreds of tons of gold deposits. Initial drilling revealed the presence of about 330 tons of gold, while predictions suggest that the gold deposit could be as much as 1,000 tons if there is any gold present at greater depths.

3. Fox News: Fox News published an article stating that Chinese geologists made a groundbreaking find of what could be the world’s biggest gold mine, with its total value estimated at about $83 billion. Fox News provides a brief summary of the news based on the state media and scientific research from China but did not include the actual research paper.https://www.foxnews.com/world/largest-gold-deposit-world-worth-83-billion-found-china

Reuters: Reuters reported almost the same news as well, providing details regarding how Chinese geological officials have uncovered huge deposits of gold in Hunan province. The article mentions that these numbers are mere estimates. https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/china-finds-83-billion-worth-gold-reserves-hunan-2024-11-21/ Both sources confirm that this news is indeed true and also mention that these are just estimates.

4. As for Fox News, it is a privately-owned news network which can make use of various methods to grab attention and stress dramatic findings.

The Chinese state media and its geological bodies could be keen on making known any large discovery of natural resources since it makes their nation look economically capable. However, Reuters can be trusted as one of the most reliable international news agencies; nevertheless, they depend on government data like any other news source.

5. The geological drillings conducted in the Wangu gold field have revealed several gold-containing veins underground. From the findings of this drilling exercise, scientists have predicted that the gold found underground may amount to roughly 330 tons, which could rise up to approximately 1,000 tons if there is more gold underground. From the findings, the deposit was expected to be worth $83 billion.
6. The estimation of the deposit's quantity is derived from the projections made through geological surveys rather than the extraction of the gold itself. Geologists explain that there are several factors that would influence whether the deposit would be able to produce its expected quantity of gold, such as the concentration of the gold within the ore, the depth of the mine, and the cost of extraction.
7. Attempts have been made by me to trace the source of origin of the claims as given in the Fox News article that refers to Chinese Geological officials and other reports from China's state-run news sources. Since the claims are made by the government itself and are included in their official reports, no individual author could be contacted regarding this matter.
