Microwaves do not cause cancer because the radiation they emit is non-ionizing meaning it is not strong enough to damage any cells or DNA. An example of ionizing radiation that does cause cancer would be an X-ray such as the ones used at the doctors office. There is not much information, but there is ongoing research regarding the potential health risks caused by the radiation emitted from microwave use

I agree with your claim, but I'm interested to see if non-ionizing radiation can't "damage" cells is there some other side effect or change that takes place due to exposure?

This fact check is very concise, however, I think it would make it even better if you added cited quotations from the source you found! I think that it would further strengthen your point if you also had more than one source.

The description of your fact check is accurate and summarized your source well, but it would be better and more concise if the title matches your claim. Your claim title seemed to be completely opposite from the source's main idea, since the fact is that "microwaves do not cause cancer because the radiation they emit is non-ionizing". The source is reliable, it's not only published from the National Library of Medicine, but also written by professionals in the health and science area relating to radiations.

No, Microwaves do not cause cancer, this is incorrect. The radiation microwaves emit is non-ionizing. Non-ionizing means that it's a type of radiation that does not have enough energy to remove electrons from molecules, meaning that it's not strong enough to damage any cells. However there is still ongoing research of the potential risks of radiation coming from microwaves.

No this is not true. According to the American Oncology Institute there is no concrete evidence that shows standing near a microwave while its in use causes cancer. It states "modern microwave ovens are designed to keep radiation within their walls", and that therefore standing next to a microwave while it's in use is not dangerous or cancer causing. Further, Cancer.org states that microwaves are non-ionizing radiation which means they are completely safe to use and be near. All these facts contradict this post and mean that it is false.

My research shows that this is not true at all and that household microwave ovens cause cancer. The radiation they emit is non-ionizing, meaning it doesn’t have enough energy to damage DNA or make food radioactive. While damaged microwaves or improper containers may pose other risks, the cancer‐causing claim is unfounded according to major health authorities. This is a big household myth. The FDA explains how microwave ovens use non-ionizing radiation and do not leak harmful radiation. The FDA and CDC are regulatory agencies with public-health mandates, so their information is fairly unbiased but may emphasize safety compliance. Long-term and high-exposure microwaves in unusual settings may influence cancer progression in animal models, but this is not common in household microwave use. The claim that “microwaves cause cancer” is false for typical household microwave use. The type of radiation involved in microwave cooking is non-ionizing and lacks the energy to damage DNA or make food radioactive. The myth may arise from confusion over the word “radiation” or improper use of appliances, but proper use is safe according to multiple health authorities.

The claim that microwaves cause cancer is false. A study published on PubMed through the National Library of Medicine stating “Long-term exposure to microwave radiation provokes cancer growth: evidences from radars and mobile communication systems” is seeming to support this idea, but its findings are misunderstood. In short, microwaves themselves do not cause cancer, however their studies suggest that long term, high level exposure to the radiation they release may increase the risk of cancer over many years, often a decade or more. To further fact check, I found an article from the American Oncology Institute titled “Do Microwave Ovens Cause Cancer? Unveiling Facts and Busting Myths.” Their research concludes that there is no concrete or consistent scientific evidence suggesting that microwaves cause cancer. Overall, current evidence does not support the claim that microwaves themselves cause cancer.

This claim is false as microwaves do not cause cancer. Microwave ovens use non-ionizing radiation, which does not affect or damage DNA and therefore cannot cause cancer. This type of radiation only heats food by exciting water molecules and does not make food radioactive. This has been studied and tested for decades in physics and medical science. In an article from the FDA they stated “Non-ionizing radiation does not have enough energy to knock electrons out of atoms". (https://www.fda.gov/radiation-emitting-products/resources-you-radiation-emitting-products/microwave-ovens) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is a trusted health organization who bases their conclusions on decades of laboratory research and real-world data. Because the claim isn’t supported by credible scientific studies and goes against well-established research, the SIFT method proves it is false.

The title of this claim is very attention grabbing, and is an exaggerated version of the truth. This title makes it seem as though microwaves will cause cancer, however the article provided explains how it only increases the potential for cancer. Other reliable sources explain how there are many misconceptions around microwave radiation, and clarify the facts regarding the connection between cancer and microwaves. https://www.americanoncology.com/blogs/do-microwave-ovens-cause-cancer-unveiling-facts-and-busting-myths The American Oncology Institute mentions that there is no concrete evidence suggesting that common household microwaves cause cancer. They explain that microwaves are subject to strict safety standards that ensure the amount and type of radiation emitted is safe for human use. This is a reputable source to fact check against, with no apparent bias. The AOI says that current evidence does not support this claim, however it is important to continue researching and staying informed as new information and studies come out. This statement shows that they are dedicated to providing people with the correct information and urge readers to stay informed . They state that there are no current studies showing a link between microwaves and cancer, while understanding that future studies could perhaps have different information that could change what we currently know. https://www.fda.gov/radiation-emitting-products/resources-you-radiation-emitting-products/microwave-ovens The FDA is another reliable source to look at when checking the truth to this claim because it allows a look into the federal government's opinions, and how they think microwaves are affecting consumers. The FDA explains how there are radiation standards microwave manufacturers have to follow, and the federal government enforces this standard. Both of these articles point out the potential for radiation to cause harm to humans, but provide information that confirms that Microwaves do not cause cancer.

Microwaves do not directly cause cancer. Microwave ovens use non-ionizing radiation. The FDA also regulates microwaves and has been for a long time. Manufacturers are required to meet strict guidelines. This limits the radiation in general. It does note that microwaves can heat body tissues. Although this does not relate to causing cancer. Injuries can happen because of the high heat, but not cause cancer. This article has little to no bias because it is directly from the FDA. They want to protect consumers and companies from being sued.

I believe that this claim is false. Microwaves do not cause cancer. Since 1971, the FDA has controlled the production of microwave ovens. To safeguard the public's health, makers of microwave ovens must certify their goods and adhere to safety performance requirements established and upheld by the FDA. Also, microwaves do not pose the same hazards as x-rays or other forms of ionizing radiation because they are non-ionizing radiation, according to the FDA's official website. The only thing that can change atoms and molecules and harm cells in organic matter is exposure to ionizing radiation. All of this information is directly from the FDA website (https://www.fda.gov/radiation-emitting-products/resources-you-radiation-emitting-products/microwave-ovens#:~:text=The%20Food%20and%20Drug%20Administration,heat%20that%20cooks%20the%20food) Additionally this website (https://www.ehn.org/microwave-myths-and-facts-revisited?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=17673658777&gbraid=0AAAAAow5yZ6FdrOOyxcR3aZ7un6UANEs5&gclid=Cj0KCQiAnJHMBhDAARIsABr7b84AmAxuvsOYRoRzTC3nn1p5F-ZrpRM2mbcZdinr0qogMrnjm7Z0E6caAje6EALw_wcB) from Environmental Health News also states that micorvaes do not cause cancer. All of these finding show that this claim is 100% false.

This claim is false. Microwave ovens use non- ionizing radiation, which cannot damage DNA like X-rays or gamma rays. Using a microwave to cook food does not cause cancer, and health organizations confirm this. The only danger comes from burns or overheated food.

Long term exposure to low intesnity to microwave radiation may increase cancer risk in humans and animals as well. Evidence from epidemiological studies and animal experiments. These studies indicate that prolonged exposure can show higher cancer incidence. Most likely due to the cellular damage. The National Library of Medicine argues that safety guidelines may be underestimated and biological effects should be reexamined. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21716201/
