Consuming Red Bull and similar energy drinks can be unhealthy both physically and mentally. These drinks contain high levels of caffeine and sugar, which can lead to health issues such as increased heart rate and elevated blood pressure.

According to Healthline, “Energy drinks like Red Bull have been linked to heart problems, including heart attacks in rare cases” and may also cause “anxiety, sleep problems, and other nervous system disorders” (Healthline). The National Federation of State High School Associations also warns that “energy drinks can cause mood swings, aggression, and increased risk of infection” (NFHS). While occasional consumption might not be as risky, regular use can lead to long-term health issues.

The article that is linked to this claim covers a little about the side effects of excessive intake of energy drinks (Redbull). The specific line from neurosciencenews.com that this claim is referring to states, "Side-effects of excessive intake of the high caffeine drinks, with other stimulants taurine, guarana and ginseng, can lead to a range of negative physical and mental health consequences, including anxiety, depression, or even stress PTSD and substance abuse." Just, based off of this line we cannot conclude that this claim is true.

However, according to Harvard Health Publishing (https://www.health.harvard.edu/nutrition/are-energy-drinks-bad-for-you) The FDA has linked energy drink consumption to death and other serious health conditions. Additionally, the article states that research has shown that energy drinks can disrupt normal heart function, including elevated blood pressure and abnormal electrical activity in the heart. Harvard Health Publishing concluded that energy drinks are safe to drink, just not everyday since it can cause long term physical health problems.

Additionally, according to The National Library of Medicine (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10535526/), energy drinks such as Redbull can have effects on the neurological system. The article states that caffeine enhances dopamine related behavior which suggests that high doses "may cause restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, tremors" and even in some cases, energy drinks can cause seizures.

In conclusion, this claim does seem to be overall true. It is safe to consume energy drinks in small doses, but too much of it can lead to long term physical and mental health problems.

This claim is true, redbull is unhealthy physically and mentally. Many individuals, specifically college students, have increased their intake of energy drinks as advertising for these products have skyrocketed. Though caffeine can help you become more alert, there are many negative side effects.

A study from the national library of medicine looked at a diverse range of individuals' caffeine intake and observed how it affected cardiac effects, gastrointestinal effects, neurologic effects, renal effects, gynaecological effects, autoimmune and skin effects. Through this study, they found negative impacts, as energy drinks resulted in raised heart rate, blood pressure, anxiety, stress, liver damage, etc. The study stated that “(47.7%) had cardiac outcomes, (13.9%) had gastrointestinal outcomes, (25.7%) had neurological outcomes, (8.1%) had renal outcomes, (2.3%) had gynaecological outcomes, and (2.3%) had dermatological outcomes”. In small doses, caffeine helps individuals feel more alert and less tired, but when individuals take in too much caffeine, it can have negative long term effects.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10535526/

A study published by Innovations in Neuroscience links energy drink consumption to decrease of judgement when making decisions. The study found that students in college specifically use energy drinks such as red bull to mix alcohol with, and this can cause damage to psychological and cognitive functions. The same study also discusses how energy drinks can trigger/ worsen mental illness since caffeine can negatively affect the brain. Caffeine can block A1 and A2 receptors in the brain, which affects mood and behavior so ultimately caffeine can worsen mental health issues. However, this study does point out that caffeine can have some positive effects with OCD and ADHD since it increases dopamine activity in the brain, but ultimately, caffeine is linked to doing more harm than good.

The claim that red bull is unhealthy physically and mentally is true as it has negative effects on blood pressure, heart rate, ect, as well negative impacts on anxiety and depression.

This claim appears to be true.

The original article linked from Neuroscience News is a copy-paste from the Flinders University website, where the same information is upheld. The research cited by Flinders is actually an academic journal focused on empirical data collected by researchers on energy-drink intake and why its consumers are drawn to it, rather than the actual effects of the drinks.

However, the article does state that there are negative mental and physical side-effects from excessive consumption of energy-drinks, "Side-effects of excessive intake of the high caffeine drinks, with other stimulants taurine, guarana and ginseng, can lead to a range of negative physical and mental health consequences, including anxiety, depression, or even stress PTSD and substance abuse. Reported adverse effects range in severity from headaches to heart palpitations, renal failure, seizures, and in rare cases death."

The National Library of Medicine also researched and found negative side-effects from consuming high-caffeine drinks. Research from the organization stated that, "The analysis shows a significant prevalence of adverse effects, particularly on the cardiovascular and neurovegetative systems. In particular, the analysis identified nine cases of cardiac arrest, three of which were fatal."

Harvard Health stated that energy drinks can disrupt normal heart function, elevate blood pressure, and sometimes increase electrical activity in the heart. The organization recommends that you do not make a habit of drinking them daily, and not at all if you have previous heart or blood pressure issues.

All in all, this claim appears to be true.

Red Bulls being harmful for both your physical and mental health. This statement can be true but exaggerated depending on someone’s personal health conditions. An article published in 2025 by the Mayo Clinic, the number one ranked hospital. State how energy drinks contain harmful ingredients such as caffeine and taurine that can negatively affect the heart. When the body is also in contact with those chemicals the heart rate and blood pressure can change. However, the Mayo Clinic also expressed that, “A healthy heart can handle caffeine in moderation, but a fragile heart may not be able to”. The human body can handle a reasonable amount of caffeine and it must be done in moderation. Another article published by UCLA Health Clinical Nutrition in 2023, Dr. Garcia states the recommended caffeine intake for adolescents is less than 100mg per day and energy drinks contain 100-200 mg per serving. Dr Garcia explains, “kids who use caffeine regularly, the effects of withdrawal might be more concern. These symptoms depend on how much caffeine the adolescent is used to consuming”. Based on these two articles, energy drinks are undoubtedly bad for the human heart, but it depends on your own personal health conditions and knowing how much is safe.

This claim is true, Red Bull energy drinks have negative consequences on your body. An article from Healthline, a well known and reputable source of information on health topics (healthline.com), backs up the claim that excessive Red Bull consumption can be directly related to heart problems and death. Their source for this information is from the National Library of Medicine (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8280314/). Their research shows there has been a rapidly increasing number of hospitalizations linked to energy drink consumption causing cardiovascular problems. The most common effects noted were chest pain, palpitations, nausea/vomiting, and cardiac arrest, and 3 out of the 32 studied cases resulted in death. Another study from Harvard Health (https://www.health.harvard.edu/nutrition/are-energy-drinks-bad-for-you), confirms that highly caffeinated beverages such as Red Bull are shown to disrupt normal heart function. Their studies claim that people who drink energy drinks every day are more prone to experience elevated blood pressure and other bodily activity that increases the risk of serious and potentially life threatening arrhythmias.

From the provided article and the headline from News Detective  “Redbull is unhealthy physically and mentally”, my findings were that energy drinks, not just Redbull do have an impact on health over a period of time with the inclusion of excessive intake of those drinks. There has been a rise in consumption of energy drinks with teens and young adults, this can be seen through the marketing and advising done by brands. Highly caffeinated drinks can lead to the negative health effects like anxiety, substance abuse, etc. with other stimulants like guarana, taurine, and ginseng and even in extreme circumstances cardiovascular problems as well.https://neurosciencenews.com/energy-drink-addiction 15608/#:~:text=Side%2Deffects%20of%20excessive%20intake,stress%20PTSD%20and%20substance%20abuse.

“The FDA has received numerous reports linking energy drink consumption to deaths and serious adverse reactions, including elevated blood pressure, convulsions, and heart rhythm abnormalities. Many of these cases have resulted in hospitalizations. From 2022 to 2023, there was a 24.2% increase in cases of pediatric exposure to energy drinks for children and teens under 20 years old, according to America’s Poison Centers. The majority, or 78%, of these cases were unintentional exposures, meaning the children did not realize they were consuming energy drinks or how much caffeine they were drinking.”

This article demonstrates the result of consuming high caffeine drinks over an excessive period of time can and will damage a person’s heart function which can lead to serious life risk. This study also found that mixing an energy drink with alcohol can be misleading with the level of intoxication to a person. https://www.health.harvard.edu/nutrition/are-energy-drinks-bad-for-you

“Reports underscore that energy drinks have deleterious effects on a broad spectrum of bodily organs, culminating in mild adversities such as anxiety, gastrointestinal disturbances, dehydration, nervousness, and tachycardia, along with more severe outcomes like rhabdomyolysis, acute kidney injury (AKI), ventricular fibrillation, seizures, acute mania, and stroke. Furthermore, instances linking energy drink consumption to fatalities have been documented.”

From this article it contains a study of seeing the effects with different energy drinks like Monster, Redbull, etc., and discovered that with high comsummtion of these drinks, increase in glucose levels and ventricular arrhymias, cardiac problems can occur and even sudden death with young, considerably healtly patients. Along with this the overconsumtion may also have effects on the nervous system like seizures as seen with pautents who have known epilepsy and with those who dont.  https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10535526/

Overall, I believe that this headline is true to a certain extent. Redbull can effect a persons health with overconsumtion but not just Redbull alone. other highly caffeinated drinks as well. Both of these articles mention the effects of energy drinks over a period of time when the person is consuming these highly caffeinated filled drinks along with the other stimulants like guarana, taurine, and ginseng. Not to say that a person can not have an energy drink every once in a while but overconsumtion of these drinks can lead to negative effects on ones health.

The claim that Redbull is unhealthy both physically and mentally is true. Excessive drinking of any energy drink, specifically Redbull, can lead to problems such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, etc. (Neuroscience News). Other extreme problems could be renal failure, heart problems, seizures or even death. Energy drink consumption has increased so much with many new brands and extravagant flavors to try. Some people drink up to four energy drinks a day which is insane. Even drinking one everyday can lead to these extreme health problems and the majority of the consumers are young adults which is even worse because they have effects on the growing brain.

A study was conducted by the National Health Institute on rats where some were given water, some redbull, some ethanol. The results showed a significant increase in the heart glucose and glycogen concentration. (National Library of Medicine). The effects that Red Bull and other energy drinks on the body outweigh the energy they provide. Overall, energy drinks are not meant for daily consumption and doing so can lead to many intense health problems.

The claim that energy drinks, in this case specifically Red Bull, affect one’s mental and physical abilities, is factual. However, the title is misleading because prolonged and overconsumption of energy drinks is what leads to mental and physical issues. In Harvard Health Publishing, the article, “Are energy drinks bad for you?” edited by Anthony L. Komaroff, shares that “if you are healthy and need a quick surge of energy, it is okay to consume an occasional energy drink — no more than one a day” (Komaroff 2025). Komaroff suggests that those with a medical history of heart problems or high blood pressure should be the ones to avoid this type of caffeinated drink.

According to the article, “The Dark Side of Energy Drinks: A Comprehensive Review of Their Impact on the Human Body” by Andrea Costantino, Aniello Maiese, Julia Lazzari, Chiara Casula, Emanuela Turillazzi, Paola Frati, and Vittorio Fineschi, their research in NLM, finds that not only do energy drinks risk one’s health, but overconsumption has also led to “nine cases of cardiac arrest, three of which were fatal” (Costantino et.al 2023) They find that energy drinks are a substance that can be abused, just like any other addictive vice. Physical repercussions for drinking an energy drink include:

Deleterious effects on a broad spectrum of bodily organs, culminating in mild adversities such as anxiety, gastrointestinal disturbances, dehydration, nervousness, and tachycardia, along with more severe outcomes like rhabdomyolysis, acute kidney injury (AKI), ventricular fibrillation, seizures, acute mania, and stroke. (2023)

As for one’s mental well-being, the chemicals in energy drinks are known to be “associated with stress, anxiety, and depression” when consumed daily. Therefore, NLM proposes to regulate “the sale and consumption of these drinks” for minors until there is more research on how this drink affects human development.

This research from both government websites supports the fact that energy drinks can cause damaging health issues. Moreover, it comes down to this question: are the consequences worth drinking something that is meant to give you energy for a short period of time? Harvard Health Publishing promotes other energy alternatives instead of ingesting caffeine, such as “nutritional, exercise, and lifestyle” (Komaroff 2025) changes.

This claim appears to be true.

Though drinking a 8.4oz RedBull a day for an adult is unlikely to be harmful for you short term, it can long term. It is high in sugar content (38g) for a 12oz size, and low in nutrients.

A study in 2023 showed 30 women have a small increase in blood pressure. Another study in 2023 proved large amounts of niacin in relation to liver toxicity, which is present in RedBull. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/red-bull-side-effects#side-effects

According to https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4393199/ RedBull was found to raise blood pressure and heart rate.

For mental health, excessive energy drink intake can negatively affect your emotions. Through bursts of high sugar content and stimulations to the nervous system, it can cause irritability to one's mood. https://www.verywellmind.com/what-happens-when-you-consume-energy-drinks-regularly-11808532
